The Hurds Hill Knitting Escape. 8 – 10 November 2019

Welcome to Hurds Hill, near Langport in Somerset.

Browse and book here for an early-winter knitting escape in 2019.

From 8 – 10 November, we will be the sole occupants of this lovely Georgian country house, along with our hosts of course.

Please don’t confuse this with the same escape the previous weekend; it is happening twice.  I regret I will be unable to swap people from one weekend to the other.

The house has been beautifully renovated by the current owners and in 2019, I am holding a weekend knitting escape at Hurds Hill.  You are invited.

This is not a hotel, and although parts of the property are used for conferences and business meetings, the heart of the house – where we will be – is a country residence.  It is a unique – even eccentric, in places – space, with eclectic objects, thousands of books, pianos, inspired decorating choices, comfortable, welcoming spaces and lovely food and drink.

This house is not corporate.  Each bedroom feels as if you have been given a slightly eccentric bedroom at a country house party weekend.  It’s not ‘smart’.  No-one will vacuum your room or make the bed – unless you do it.  The rooms are hotel-standard clean, however.

What you will get is an individually themed room, with a double bed, tea and coffee making, a hair-drier, a modern, smart en-suite bathroom (almost all have showers, but not baths), and privacy.  Maybe you will be in the London Room. Or I might put you in the Red Room, or the Art Deco Room.  Four rooms are on the ground floor should you need this; however, the 1st floor rooms can be accessed via a stair lift as well as two staircases.

There are multiple knitting spaces.  You can sit in one of the large sitting rooms, of which there are two; or choose a library, the orangery, or another smaller nook.  We eat together at a table for up to 18 guests.  And we are the only guests.

The Knitting

Kathryn and I will be there.  There is no formal teaching but of course there will be support should you need it. I will design two Hurds Hill designs inspired by the imagery of the house and its history.  With pattern variations this will amount to (probably) four options, and you will be given these new designs. But if you don’t want to knit these at the escape, that’s fine.  Just bring your own knitting, whatever that might be.  Ask if you want help.  Otherwise, we will also be knitting.

The pop-up shop will be there, but only in case you fancy something.  There will be no need to buy anything.

The Food and Drink

The weekend is fully inclusive.  This means tea time, breakfast, lunch and three course dinners.  Dinners will include wine.  The breakfast is varied.  Have croissants, fruit, cereal, yoghurt and / or fully comprehensive cooked to order options.  Lunch is a varied buffet.

Dinner is three courses with wine included.  Vegetarian, vegan and allergy-related needs can all be catered for and I will need to know this well in advance, but note:  chef prepares the evening dinner as if you were a house-guest.  If you have told me you are a vegetarian for example, or allergic to fish, chef will make sure you have a suitable option, but this is country house dining, not a multiple-choice restaurant.  If you know you are very restricted in what you like and will and won’t eat, I don’t think you should come.  What I would say is, the hosts will do their best to accommodate you, and the food is delicious and home-made, but you won’t get a menu.

Room Options and Access

I will allocate your room.  Please tell me if you have any special needs and I will see if we can manage them.  There is a stair lift.

This is an old building with steps, ledges and so on.  Take care.

Dates and Timetable

This event is from about 3.30 pm on Friday 1 November through to departure at 4 pm on Sunday 3 November.  Due to high demand, I may be making a further weekend or weekends available so you may see other date options; but I regret that for reasons of venue liaison, safeguarding event viability, and personal sanity, I will be unable to swap you from one weekend to another.
